This rug comes from small group with similar design of which the archtype is probably the example in the Ballard Collection (Catalogue of Oriental rugs in the Collection of James F. Ballard. Indianapolis 1924, no.44, pp.84-85). Two further examples are in the Markarian Collection (Denny, W.B. and Walker D.) contributions by The Markarian Album Cincinatti 1988, nos.6 and 7, pp.86-89. In his introductory chapter, Denny determines the various influences that have produced these rugs, pointing out the similarity of the spandrels and borders with seventeenth century 'Transilvanian' and Ushak weavings (pp.40-46)
