The wedding of Princess Beatrice, the youngest child of Princess Victoria to Prince Henry of Battenburg took place on July 23, 1885 on the Isle of Wight. Princess Alexandra and the Ladies in Waiting wore dresses very similar to this, with demi-toilette bodices cut down the back and with sleeves to the elbow as requested by the Duchess of Buccleuch. The Princess and her bridesmaids wore deep swathes of silk caught up with orange blossom. The infamous Madame Elise of 170 Regent Street remodelled the original designs of Mrs Davis for Princess Alexandra so quickly that the painter Frith asked for a special sight of the gown so that he might paint it with some accuracy.
