with moulded top and rusticated frieze, above two short and two long drawers, each with later painted moulded panels flanking a central ogee projecting corbel, the upper one concealing a secret drawer, all flanked by split mouldings, on stile feet, replacements -- 36in. (91cm.) wide

Lot Essay

This chest, with its very heavy construction, predates the more common so-called Jacobean chest with geometrically moulded drawer fronts and is a very early example of the chest with drawers
