A unusual late 19th Century mainly brass salesmans' model of a steam winch, possibly by G.E. Bellis & Co or their successors, comprising a horizontal twin cylinder small bore engine with piston valves, bayonet frames and disc cranks, the crankshaft direct coupled to the rope drum via a worm drive, the spirally grooved drum clutched to the cross-shaft by a left hand threaded hand wheel and spring. Final inching of the rope drum and out-board mounted capstans is carried out via a gear driven shaft with dog clutch dissengagement to bevel gear and handwheel connected to a valve mounted above the engine valve chest. Finished in black and polished brightwork (some restoration) and mounted on a red painted metal and varnished wood base (later) -- 5½ x 11¼in. (14 x 28.5cm.)
