Lot Essay

Sir Henry Clinton, the elder (1738?-1795) was the only son of Admiral the Hon. George Clinton. He played such a great part in the battle of Long Island on 16 August 1776 and in the capture of New York on 15 September that he was promoted to lieutenant-general, and made a knight of the Bath in the following year. Clinton married Harriett (1767) daughter of Thomas Carter, by whom he had two sons who both rose to be generals in the army
