An exceptional late 19th-Century gunmetal, brass and steel model of a twin cylinder compound vertical reversing marine engine,
built by Abraham Garratt between 1888 and 1898 involving some 9000 hours and including brass bound mahogany lagged cylinders 1½in. and 2 5/8in. bores x 2in. stroke with centrally mounted valve chest with H.P. and L.P. slide valves with handwheel and lever operated Stephenson's link reverse with double die blocks, inlet pipe with hand lever operated butterfly type main stop valve, piston rod tailshaft guides with studded stuffing boxes, adjustable valve chest lubricator, slipper type crosshead guides incorporated in the rear frames and cast integrally with the rear mounted tubed condensor, L.P. crosshead driven air and feed sumps mounted within the hotwell with expansion dome, washout plugs and output valve and appropriate pipework. Further details include barrelled, facetted connecting rods, crankshaft with three unused eccentrics, running in four main bearings with ingenious anti-splash oilers, shaft thrust block, spoked flywheel and bronze propellor with four curved blades, finished in black and polished brightwork and mounted on a mahogany display base on four turned feet -- 16in. (40.6cm.) x 14in. (35.5cm.)
