A rare late 17th-Century brass pocket solar azimuth dial and clinometer compendium,
signed NHager Arnstad, arranged as a compendium, the case with two hinged covers engraved with scroll centres and borders, twin latches secure to the outer rim of the compass/calendar shallow drum shaped case, one inner cover silvered and with signature, the other inner cover also silvered with inclinometer engraved 20°-0°-20° with brass pointer, the calendar dial with zodiac scale divided with monthly scales for seasonal adjustment and decorated with black or red wax inlaid scrolling foliage, the rotating cursor with the pointers to read against the elliptical scales and connected to the iron compass needle set to read against an hour scale divided 4-12-8, the face similarly engraved with scrolling foliage -- 2¼in. (5.7cm.) diameter
