Lot Essay

A trimmed oval print from the same negative appeared in a mixed portrait album attributed to Cameron and Rejlander at Sotheby's London, 1 May 1995, lot 170. The Royal Photographic Society has since identified two of the prints in that album as the work of the Amateur Photographic Association member, Ronald Leslie Melville, however a comparison of this photograph with other portraits by Melville in the collection of the Scottish Photography Archive suggests it is unlikely to be an example of his work. The style of this near life-size portrait head is both technically and aesthetically similar to that of Julia Margaret Cameron although the use of sharp focus on the child's eye is unusual. It has not yet proved possible to confirm this attribution.
