In 1885, Robinson showed four photographs two of which are illustrated here at the annual exhibition of the Photographic Society of Great Britain. He had exhibited regularly since 1852, frequently winning awards and medals, and had become established as one of the highest authorities on the art of photography
Of The Valentine and its companion piece Who Could Have Sent It? the reviewer in the British Journal of Photography wrote "..a pair of single figure studies which combine in an unusual degree the elements which go to make a photograph into a picture."
These two prints, in their original exhibition frames, were aquired directly from the exhibition and remained in the same family collection until 1989.
