Album containing forty-nine albumen prints including four mounted as two two-part panoramas, 8 x 20 in., other sizes approx. 10½ x 8½ in. or the reverse, mounted one-per-page, several with indistinct ink stamp on verso, half maroon morocco, titled and ruled in gilt on front cover, folio.

By descent to the present owner whose great grandfather was a European aristocrat and diplomat (b. 1858) who spent time on diplomatic missions in Japan in the late 1880s, followed by India and South America. At the beginning of this century he returned to Japan before going to China, Ceylon and Siam. It was during these travels that he acquired the photographs in this lot as well as those in lots 96, 107, 108, 115 and 119 and put them into albums on his return.

Street scenes, architectural studies, river views, images of elephants, and several portraits including a group portrait with a Kandyan chief, Singhalese girls with vegetables, Singhalese men including two portraits of young men and a man displaying a very large lobster; approx. fifteen views and portraits studies in Aden including panoramic views of the harbour and the town, an image of camels in a field; and group portraits of young boys, women and their children and two women wearing traditional beaded jewellery.
