Twenty-four albumen prints, six approx. 5¼ x 4 in. to, one approx. 10¾ x 15 in., the remainder mostly around 8¾ x 10 7/8 in. or the reverse, one initialled and dated R.S. 1880 in the negative, one titled and numbered in the negative, the six small prints mounted on one sheet of card, back-to-back, the others mounted individually on card, the majority titled in pencil in French on mounts. Provenance
Formerly the property of Wilhelm von Eckermann (b. 1853), in later years First Lord-in-Waiting to Sweden's Queen Victoria. A lieutenant in the Swedish Royal Navy, he served temporarily in the French Navy and embarked on the armoured frigate La Thémis on November 26, 1879 for the expedition to China and Japan, led by Contre Admiral Baron Charles Duperré. Two views from Ceylon, one (initialled) from Vladivostock, one large unknown harbour scene, the remainder studies from the Philippines including six small portraits, one large portrait group, a cigar factory, Manila cathedral and the volcano at Mayon.
