Two ambrotypes, 3½ x 4¼ in. and 3¾ x 4¾ in., decorative gesso frames with gilt-metal hanging rings, each signed and dated A.M. Dixon Filey 1860 in ink on verso. (2)

Lot Essay

The exhibition label in the smaller image reads Roman Pottery, Coins Etc. found on the [?...] at Filey on the Estate of Rev. R. Brooke in the occupation of the [?E. Elders]. Oct. 1857 and records the finds from the first excavation at Filey. The large pot in the centre of the photograph is still extant in the collection of the Yorkshire Museum whereas the other items have unfortunately disappeared.

The second image shows the site at Crescent Gardens in Filey to where the remains of a Roman signal station were moved and still stand today.
