Further details
The Salingia was one of the many German Student Clubs which came into existence during the Middle Ages and were especially powerful in the 19th century. The Salingia's most famous son was undoubtedly Prince Otto von Bismarck.
Legend has it that this stick, also known as a 'friendship' cane, was given by Bismarck to a British politician. The grandson of the politician served in the Second World War and carried the cane in his kit at Tobruk and El Alamein.
At the end of the war, the officer gave the stick to his batman as a memento.
Thence by descent.
