Lot Essay

Sir David Scott, 1,342 tons, was built in 1821 and is recorded as making six round trips to the East before she disappears from record in 1830. The fact that this painting is titled 1830, may indicate that the vessel was lost, perhaps even in the Sunda Strait, that year, an event likely to prompt the commissioning of a work to commemorate her.
