Lot Essay

Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, was the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and made his career in the Royal Navy which he entered in 1858. Eventually promoted Admiral of the Fleet in 1893, the year 1866 coincided with his creation as Duke of Edinburgh and it is likely his visit to Liverpool was connected with this elevation.
