Lot Essay

Admiral Sir Robert Barlow, K.C.B., was commissioned Lieutenant in 1778 and first saw action at the relief of Gibraltar in 1782. During a long and distinguished career in the Royal Navy, he was Captain of the frigate H.M.S. Pegasus at the Glorius First of June 1794, and was knighted in 1801, following his daring capture of the French frigate L'Africane.

This lot is sold with a framed article entitled 'The First Shot, 1793' which appeared in the Morning Post.
