Lot Essay

Art by Rene Peron.

Louise Brooks is Loulou, a woman who murders her lover and becomes a prostitute. Her story continues with bizarre and unexpected consequences in G.W.Pabst's landmark silent film. Brooks' sexuality is as striking today as it was the the time of the film's release. This poster is the actual copy pictured in the book by Richard Allen and Stephen Rebello, Reel Art: Great Posters From The Golden Age Of The Silver Screen, and is the only known copy. In fact except for this and the style B poster (lot 117) no original poster for this film from any country has ever been seen at auction before.
