with cream mohair head, paws and feet, white, brown and black painted googly eyes, black stitched nose and mouth, red stitched tongue, swivel head, unjointed body, card lined feet with linen pads, dressed in blue and gold cotton tunic --11in. (28cm.) tall, circa 1915 (stain to back of head, small wear to head, loss of mohair to paws and feet, fading to tunic)

Lot Essay

Chiltern's earliest bear, the Master Teddy, was first produced in 1915 at the Chiltern Toy Works in Chesham. Master Teddy was available in five sizes. His googly eyes are typical of the period, and mimic the popular animal caricatures of the day.
