The upholstered-back dining chair became popular in the early 19th century. A set of thirty-six, for instance, were supplied in 1817, for George Prince Regent, later King George IV, for the Marine Pavillion, Brighton. See J. Dinkel, The Royal Pavillion, Brighton, 1983. p.119.
