Lot Essay

Charles Dechamps became secretary to the Society of French Artists in 1872. The Society was established by the famous French impressionist dealer, Durand-Ruel, in 1870 and was situated at the German Gallery, 168 New Bond Street in London. Alma-Tadema dealt extensively with both Dechamps in London and his cousin Léon Lefèvre in Paris until the latter part of the decade, and remained on friendly terms with the family for the rest of his life.
