JOHN CHURCHILL, FIRST DUKE OF MARLBOROUGH (1650-1722)Autograph letter signed ("Marlborough") to an unnamed recipient, possibly General Wills, Commander of the Government forces at the Battle of Preston, one page, 4°, [London], 17 November 1715. Giving military instructions concerning the suppression of the current Jacobite rising. "His Majesty has comanded me to return you his thankes, and to assure you that you may depend upon his favour, and the first vacant Goverment His Majesty thinkes it very much for his service that all care imaginable shou'd be taken for the discovering all such as have held corrispondance with these Rebels, since their arrival in Lancashire, and particularly, such as have joyned them at Lancaster and Preston. The Secretary Stanhope will send you his Majesty's pleasure concerning the Prisoners, and I shou'd be glad to know what towns are most proper for the refreshing of the troops, as soon as the Prisoners are secur'd."
