Lot Essay

Stapler born at Olomouc in Moravia on 9 February 1913 contributed drawings and articles to two Prague publications Der Monat and Mesic [rare, neither is recorded in B.U.C.O.P., U.C.S., or Catalogue Portatif des Periodiques] before coming to England as a refugee. He served in the British Army. During the War he did illustrations and fashion drawings including a cover for The Queen June 2nd 1943. After the War his work included numerous drawings for Hartnell. He provided a regular double spread for Industria Britannica, a South American Magazine. He provided drawings for his fellow Czechoslovakian emigrees the Aschers including their writing paper and that of associated companies and designed dresses of their material including "The Parachute Nylon" for ballerinas at the 1947 promotion at The Dorchester Hotel in 1946 . He provided a regular London column for the Woman's page of The Christian Science Monitor, as well as the Daily Mail and numerous magazine covers and advertisements.
