An Apulian volute krater attributed to the Painter of Copenhagen 4223
Circa 340 B.C.
Side A: a nude youth holding the wing of a fluttering bird, stands within a naiskos resting on a pilaster, a fillet and ball hanging above, another naked youth holding out a large patera with cloak folded over his left arm, a dotted wreath and fillet held in his right hand, a fillet and rosette hanging above, to the right a bejewelled draped woman, holding a long-handled pan and a wreath threaded with rosettes, a fillet in the field. On the neck a female head emerging from a petalled flower, wearing necklace and ornate earrings, her hair bound in a kekryphalos, tendrils and flowers blossoming around her. Meander and dotted crossed squares below the main scene, tongued border and band of vine leaves and rosettes at the neck.
Side B: a central stele bound with taeniae and surmounted by a broad kylix, to the left a bejewelled draped woman holding a casket and fillet in one hand and dotted wreath and fillet in the other, approaching the stele on the right, a naked youth with himation draped over both arms, holding a patera and fillet in one hand, two bunches of grapes in the other, rosettes in the field. On dotted ground lines with meander and dotted crossed squares below. The neck with palmette bordered by tongued frieze below and laurel band above, scroll pattern and egg-and-dart below the rim.
Four moulded swan heads on the shoulder (one missing) and high volute handles with polychrome relief Gorgon heads on either side. Details in added white and yellow, repaired
