This sketch was drawn shortly before the sitter's departure for France at the age of nineteen. Geoffrey Murray-Smith was tragically killed in action only months later on 28 September 1915 at Vermellles, whilst serving as a second lieutenaant with the fifth battalion of the Royal Fusiliers.
