The sitter is Grace Balckburn, the Countess of Wemyss, and wife of the tenth Earl. De Laszlo painted a portrait of the sitter's husband, Francis, in the same year.
A finished portrait of the Countess, for which this is a study, was completed in 1909. In this she adopts a similar pose but holds flowers in her hands. This picture remained in the artist's studio at his death.
