Lot Essay

F. R. Window introduced his front focus camera in 1861. Window was a professional photogapher in London from at least the early 1860s and originated the cabinet-size portrait. In 1861 he suggested a new arrangement of the traditional sliding box camera moving the inner, smaller, box to the front of the camera which now carried the lens panel. Focusing was provided by a rack and pinion. The new design gave a steady and easily focused camera and the design remained popular in all sizes throughout the 1860s until bellows became more widespread.
