Literature
Bouwman pp. 22, 28; The Noblest Game 11, 48; Pageant of Cricket p. 65. Fuller Pilch (1803-70), "the batsman," was born in Norfolk, and played his first match at Lord's (MCC v. Norfolk) on 24 July 1820. It was not till 1835 that he migrated to Kent, though he then brought the county to their position of dominance, and continued to play for the side until 1855. Watts's portrait effectively conveys the sharp eye and correct, watchful stance that earned Pilch a reputation as the most accomplished batsman of his time.
