Published in G. E. Hicks's Guide to Figure Drawing (London, 1853). The delicate footwork and fine strokes of Nicholas Felix, as portrayed by Watts, are replaced by an appealing kind of solidity in Hicks's studies. His portraits are altogether more earthy, conveying a sense of strength more than of skill. The drawing of a batsman making a run had been hitherto unattempted with this degree of concentration. Hicks's sitters are thought to have included William Caffyn, and the wicket-keeper Tom Lockyer.
