The Noblest Game 47: "Of the many paintings of village cricket executed in this period, this is one of the more imaginative and least bleak. It has been suggested that it is of a match at Hambledon, but it might be almost any south-country village ground, and the church tower is not that of Hambledon." Pageant of Cricket p. 94: "evocative as an old cricket painting could ever be."

Lot Essay

The original painting, executed in 1855, was part of the Colman Gift to the M.C.C.
