Lot Essay

Portrayals of W. G. Grace by Harry Furniss (1854-1925) are among the best. This political cartoon, no doubt intended for Punch for which the artist worked up to 1894, draws on the physical likeness between the equally well-bearded and portly figures of W. G. Grace and Lord Salisbury. Both are padded up, and as they meet with a cordial handshake seem mirror images of one another.
