Lot Essay

The vignettes from the game show "W. G. Grace caught in the slips by H. Trumble," "Abel's Cuts," Lohmann missing a catch off Giffen, Gregory scoring continually "with his side hits," and "Trott the Australian Capt." having "his revenge in the 2nd innings." Grace, in fact, made a commendable first innings 66 before being caught off Giffen's bowling, while Abel was top scorer for England with 94. Australia's first innings score was just 53, Richardson taking 6 for 39 and Lohmann 13 for 3. In the second innings, Gregory made 103 and G. H. S. Trott 143, but England still won this forty-fourth Test match by 6 wickets. Another famous incident in the game occured when Ernest Jones sent a ball flying through Grace's beard for four byes, prompting the Doctor to remark": "Whatever are ye at, Jonah?"
