Lot Essay

A hugely-gifted all rounder, Albert Edwin Trott (1873-1914) began his career with Victoria and played for Australia in the 1894-95 series. However, after being omitted from the 1896 Australia team captained by his elder brother, Harry, Albert pursued a career in England, playing for Middlesex from 1898-1910 and even appearing for England in two Tests (1898-99). It was in the 1899 match between M.C.C. and Australia at Lord's that Trott achieved special renown by hitting a ball from his fellow Australian, Monty Noble, over the pavilion. In Rip's cartoon the moustached player is seen in a variety of poses, bowling, fielding, signing an autograph book, and being himself clean-bowled. A caption is given to this batting humiliation which reads: "Over the Pavilion? No!!!" -- a reference to Trot's unfortunate tendency afterwards to try and repeat the big hit.
