Lot Essay

In the earlier cartoon, MacLaren looks out of his house, "The Englishman's Home," to see the Australian kangaroo appearing among the rain clouds, and feel only too aware that "The Australian cricketers have already outplayed Notts, Northants, & Essex, & are evidently a very strong side." In the other cartoon by Charles Grave, an amiable lion and kangaroo read The Cricketer together; this has a slight worm trace at the centre of the composition. The two other cartoons by Amos and Lee also employ the kangaroo symbol.
