Harry Rountree (1875-1950) was born in New Zealand but emigrated to London in 1910, working there as an illustrator and becoming well known for his humorous animal drawings. In this two part scene, anthropomorpism is rife as the Australian kangaroo faces up to a British bulldog, a hippo and penguin are the close fielders, a stork keeps wicket, and a parrot umpires from his perch. The alteration of mood from wrapped concentration before the ball is delivered to the physical and emotional reaction afterwards is masterly.
