Literature
Published in Punch 6th June 1923 and 8th July 1925. Frank Reynolds, art editor of Punch from 1919 to 1937, was particularly succesful in conveying the hubris which is as familiar as the triumphs of cricket. In the first drawing, a hot and disgruntled batsman returns to the pavillion from where a voice asks: "What's the wicket like, George?" to which George replies: "Thawing rapidly." In the second, batsman, fielders and umpire stand mesmerised by a well struck ball, while the unfortunate bowler says to his Captain: "I'm sick of bowling to this feller -- talk about pearls before swine." To which the captain, a burly professional who hasn't bothered to take his hands from his pockets, replies: "Well, you'd better take a rest Charlie -- 'e didn't half clump that last pearl!"
