drawing in pen and black ink with touches of body colour, signed, [1925], with separately mounted caption in pencil reading "Visiting Captain: 'I've a jolly good mind to declare, dear' The Girl: 'Oh Percy this is so sudden!'", 300 x 235 (11¾ x 9¼in.), framed and glazed.

Published in Punch, 26th August 1925, and on p. 124 of A Cricket Bag (1929), a book of illustrations by the artist. James Henry Thorpe (1876-1949) was a founder member of the London Sketch Club, where he numbered fellow cricket enthusiast Frank Reynolds among his numerous circle. Besides working as an illustrator -- he produced Three Nuns Tobacco posters for many years -- he also wrote on contemporary art, and published an autobiography Happy Days in 1933.
