Lot Essay

This painting was part of a grand project initiated by the brewer and pigeon-fancier Thomas Forshaw to record all the breeds of fancy pigeon in one book. Around 1947 he commissioned Tunnicliffe to do illustrations of the birds in his collection were sold at auction on 16 March 1993 (lots 18-29). Unfortunately the publishers pulled out before the work was completed and the book was never published.
