Perry's inspirational play brought Great Britain to its first triumph in the Davis Cup for 21 years. After beating Australia 3-2 at Wimbledon in the European Zone Final V, the British team defeated the U.S.A. 4-1 in the Inter-Zone Final in Paris. Perry, invincible in the singles, went on to lead against France in the Challenge Round where his victories over Henri Cochet and André Merlin were crucial in Great Britain's 3-2 victory. "[It was] the thrill of my life! It was even greater than the joy of winning the American Championship -- for the Davis Cup is fought as a team for country."
