A rare late 18th-Century planetarium, signed on the engraved silvered horizontal plate Made for Rich'd Aldridge Esq,, By John Handsford, Bristol,, the plate further engraved Principal Affections of the PLANET'S, with tables giving the names of the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the Earth, the information in columns inscribed Mean Dis from the Sun; Periodical Rev,s Rd, ye Sun; Diurnal Pros, Rd Axis; Diameters the Sun Gl, Elongation of Ir, Pc of Sr, Planets, with further tables for the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn, with finely engraved Zodiac calendar scale, the months of the year divided into days (February 28 days only), a 'wheat-ear' decorated border enclosing a diagramatic depiction of the planets with their associated satellites, the horizontal plate mounted on a drum enclosing the geared mechanism, the winding handle with ivory mount, the geared planetary movement with silvered plate for moon's age and path, the five planetary arms with ivory planets and satellites, secured by dowel pins, the 2¼-inch sun ball with silvered engraving of the sun's face, the 1½-inch diameter terrestrial globe made up of twelve hand coloured engraved paper gores, the oceans showing the tracks of certain navigators and explorers, the continents outlined in colour, the equator with longitude scale divided in degrees and hour scale in Roman numerals (with old surface abrasions and some paper loss over Russia, China and northern Europe), mounted on a gilded-brass tripod stand located by a dowel pin to the axis, the cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet, overall height 15¾in. (40cm.), with a quantity of accessories including a high and low watermark tide plate, an illuminating lamp, a reflecting mirror, a horizon plate and other items, contained in the original oak carrying case, with accessory tray (plush lining missing), the carrying case with moulded plinth base and two swan-neck brass carrying handles -- 19 3/8in. (49.3cm.) wide
