A Dieppe bone bust type composite chess set, third quarter 18th century
In natural and red stained hues, with details heightened in polychrome, the associated royal pieces crowned, the kings holding sceptres (red kings sceptre lacking), on petal-cut discs above slender knopped stems and circular domed bases, the bishops applied with painted leather hats retaining fragments of real feather plumes, the knights modelled as hippocampus, the rooks as castellated turrets (one white rook a later carved replacement), the pawns with slender knopped stems, all pieces with serrated central discs, on domed bases, some damages and losses, in the original mahogany box, with divided and compartmented interior, with sliding cover
the kings -- 3¾in. (9.5cm) high; the pawns -- 1 11/16in. (4.3cm) high; the box -- 12 1/16in. (30.6cm) wide
