A Northern European boxwood and purpleheart chess set, late 18th or early 19th century
The royal pieces with cone-shaped finials above graduated and serrated knops with domed undersides, on conforming circular bases, the bishops with ball finials above sliced vase-shaped knops with over-lapping rims above bun-shaped discs, on circular bases with serrated rims, the knights carved with horses' heads, the manes modelled to sinister (one stem a replacement), the rooks with conical finials, with concetric ring turning above castellated turrets, the pawns with bun-shaped discs above circular bases with serrated rims, in the original fitted oak and velvet lined box, with shaped recesses for the pieces, the drop-in cover with brass escutcheon and swivel latch
