A Dieppe ivory chess set, circa 1850
The opposing sides in natural and red stained hues, the figures carved as medieval European factions, the royal pieces crowned and robed, the kings with long swords, the white bishops as ecclesiastical figures holding bibles, the red bishops as page boys also with bibles, the knights astride rearing steeds, the white knights wearing plumed wide brimmed hats and capes, the red knights cuirassed, the rooks as castellated turrets, the pawns as foot soldiers holding swords and shields and spears and shields respectively, all on circular bases with waisted bands, some minor damages, in a later fitted and velvet bound case
kings -- 4¼in. (10.8cm) high, pawns -- 2½in. (6.4cm) high
