Kumi Sugai was born in Kobé, Japan. He studied at the Fine Art School in Osaka before arriving in Paris in 1952. Sugai exhibited with the group Octobre in 1953, before holding his first one-man show at the Galerie Craven in Paris. Many exhibitions followed in Brussels, London, New York and Sao Paulo, where much of his work can be seen in public museums today.
