Born in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, he left the Waseda University in 1927 and studied with Kohtaro Takamura. In 1929 he first exhibited at the Exhibition of Kokugakai Art Association and in 1936 he co-organized "Salon Forme" with a main member of Kokugakai. The following year Nanbata took part in the organization of Jiyu-Bijutsu. He has exhibited in various internation contemporary art shows in Japan.
