Lot Essay
William Linnell had his own studio in his fathers, John Linnell, Redstone Wood House, but after moving into 'Hillsbrow' he also had a studio in London to which he would travel on most days. William made many studies in the grounds of the Redstone estate and this picture is one of them. Like his father he often merged several views into a finished picture and in this one the tree on the right is obviously the same tree painted by his father in his 'Woodcutters' in 1858.
