Lot Essay

D'Orsi, (loc. cit.), considered the present picture to be by Giaquinto, an attribution that has been rejected by both Irene Cioffi and Luigi Dania. The latter proposes an attribution to Diana by comparison with the Virgin in Glory in the collection of Sir Denis Mahon, and with a painting of a similar subject at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York.
