Lot Essay

The eclectic mix of styles on this carriage clock demonstrates the two-way trade in decorative ideas between East and West and it would be difficult to ascertain whether it was intended for the European or Japanese market. The Japonaiserie porcelain panels have a cream ground reminiscent of shibyama ivory, whilst the columns of the case are part classical Corinthian and part bamboo. See also footnotes to lot 1 and 46.
