The case modelled as a bookcase surmounted by mounts of an open volume, a wreath and a bunch of grapes, the white enamel Roman chapter ring with engine-turned centre and bezel cast with trailing roses, steel moon hands, with the figures of two school boys in togas seated on stools and reading to the front, on stepped oval base with trailing floral swag mounts and on bun feet cast with quatrefoils within lozenges, the twin barrel movement with silk suspension and strike on bell

Lot Essay

This model is illustrated in Tardy Les Plus Belles Pendules Francaises, Paris 1994, p.292. The present version differs slightly in having a gilt centre to the dial. As the subject suggests, such clocks were popular for libraries and studies.
