The Pinto is a descendant of the Spanish horses brought to America in the 16th Century. Until the 18th and 19th Centuries, a part coloured strain was evident in Europe, in horses derived from Spanish blood. The name "Pinto" comes from the Spanish word pintado, meaning "painted" In America, there are two breed societies for this horse-the Pinto Horse Association and the American Paint Horse Association, both with headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.
