EARLY 17TH CENTURY
Details
A German Partizan
Early 17th Century
With broad double-edged blade divided into two zones of three and four flutes respectively, etched on each face with hatched arabesques and a circular panel inscribed respectively 'Fed (sic) Sed Cui Uide' and 'Nec Timere Nec Timide', the lower part shaped and etched on each face to form two sea-monsters crossed diagonally, their heads forming the basal lugs, tapering eight-sided socket with prominent moulding at top and bottom, two side-straps (incomplete), and later wooden staff
21¾in. (55.3cm.) head
This appears to belong to a group of partizans etched with various Latin inscriptions, some bearing the dates 1631 and 1632, that are thought to have been carried by officers in a German (probably Saxon) Protestant army
See The Kretzschmar von Kienbusch Collection, p. 264
